ATREE invites applications for faculty positions in the broad theme of environment and development, specifically in areas of land and water resources, forests and livelihoods, energy and climate change.

Qualifications: Candidates must be dynamic and highly motivated scholars, Ph.D. with one or more years of post-doctoral experience, with a strong track record of academically rigorous but socially relevant research in the areas indicated above. They could be trained in any branch of the social sciences or of the natural/ physical/ engineering sciences, or both. Applicants must have a strong interest in applied research, working in multi-disciplinary teams, and teaching on environmental issues.

Responsibilities: Core faculty members will participate in long-term academic, policy and action oriented research programmes that address important issues in sustainable development. They will participate in Ph.D. teaching, advising and short-term training programmes. Faculty members are also expected to share institutional responsibilities.

Appointments and Emoluments: Appointments will be at the level of Fellow (equivalent to Assistant Professor) or Senior Fellow (mid-level Associate Professor) depending upon candidate's experience. The positions are long-term, supported by endowments.

Climate Change Research Symposium

The Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research (DISCCRS, pronounced discourse), March 13-20, 2010, connects natural and social scientists engaged in research related to climate change, impacts and solutions. The goal is to broaden perspectives and establish a collegial peer network to address climate challenges at the interface of science and society. During the week-long symposium -- to be held in the Tonto National Forest near Phoenix, Arizona -- participants will present and discuss their research, hone interdisciplinary communication and team skills, and discuss emerging research, societal and professional issues with each other and with established researchers invited to serve as mentors. Participation will be limited to 34 early career scholars identified by an interdisciplinary committee of research scientists based on review of submitted applications. Airfare and on-site expenses supported by the National Science Foundation.

Eligibility: PhD requirements completed April 1, 2007 - July 31, 2009. Selection will favor applicants who plan to engage in interdisciplinary research careers in any subject within or relevant to climate change, its impacts and solutions.We encourage applicants from the natural and social sciences, economics, mathematics, engineering, or any other field so long as the research focus relates to climate change, its impacts or solutions. CFP: PhD Workshop on Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy

The Environmental Policy Research Center (FFU) at Freie Universität Berlin is delighted to announce a call for papers for the first transatlantic PhD Workshop on “Forging Closer Ties: Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy”, in Berlin, November 29 - December 5, 2009. The Workshop will bring together PhD students and faculty from Freie Universität Berlin and North American universities to examine developments in transatlantic climate and energy relations. Supervised by renowned faculty from the US, Canada and Germany, doctoral students in the social sciences will present their research in the following focus areas: renewable energy policy, environmental policy, energy security, and climate change. The workshop will provide participating PhD students with the opportunity to discuss their papers with peers and senior researchers in working groups and plenary sessions. In addition, field trips will offer the participants the possibility to meet with representatives from various associations and think tanks, as well as with representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations and other institutions. The workshop is timed to proceed directly the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, December 7-18, 2009. Those wishing to attend the Copenhagen meeting can easily travel there after the end of the workshop.

The workshop aims at providing a forum for exchange of research ideas and at promoting network building among leading young researchers across the Atlantic. The sessions and meetings will introduce the participants to European and North American perspectives on environmental and energy issues and contribute to strengthening transatlantic dialogue on challenges and opportunities in the context of renewable energy development, climate change and energy security.

Submission Procedure: Interested PhD students enrolled at Canadian and US universities should submit a CV, one letter of recommendation and an abstract of their paper (approx. 1200 words) by email to Matthias Kuder <matthias.kuder@fu-berlin.de>no later than July 20, 2009. An international program committee will evaluate the submissions and select participants on a competitive basis. Selection of participants will be announced by August 15, 2009. There is no participation fee. Confirmed participants may be eligible for a Freie Universität fellowship covering travel costs and hotel accommodation. CFP: Political Ecology Paper Prize

The Political Ecology Society (PESO) announces the 2010 Eric Wolf Prize for the best article-length paper based on dissertation research. We seek papers based in substantive field research that make an innovative contribution to Political Ecology. To be eligible for the competition, scholars must be ABD or have received their Ph.D. within the two years prior to publication of this announcement. A cash prize of $500 accompanies the award, which will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology. The paper will be published in the Journal of Political Ecology.

The preferred format for papers is electronic, but CDs and paper will also be accepted. Environmental Policy/ Conflict Resolution Ph.D. Fellowship

The Morris K. Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Dissertation Fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses from July 1 through June 30. Deadline for receipt of complete application packet: February 20. International Research Travel Grants

This spring, ESF's Randolph G. Pack Environmental Institute is able to provide partial financial support for a small number of graduate student research travel grants in the area of international environmental or natural resources policy. The grants likely will not exceed $500 and are for ESF graduate student research travel commencing prior to June 30, 2009, or for non-reimbursed research travel expenses incurred during the current academic year, prior to that date.
