Faculty Positions: Environment and Development

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE)

ATREE invites applications for faculty positions in the broad theme of environment and development, specifically in areas of land and water resources, forests and livelihoods, energy and climate change.

Qualifications: Candidates must be dynamic and highly motivated scholars, Ph.D. with one or more years of post-doctoral experience, with a strong track record of academically rigorous but socially relevant research in the areas indicated above. They could be trained in any branch of the social sciences or of the natural/ physical/ engineering sciences, or both. Applicants must have a strong interest in applied research, working in multi-disciplinary teams, and teaching on environmental issues.

Responsibilities: Core faculty members will participate in long-term academic, policy and action oriented research programmes that address important issues in sustainable development. They will participate in Ph.D. teaching, advising and short-term training programmes. Faculty members are also expected to share institutional responsibilities.

Appointments and Emoluments: Appointments will be at the level of Fellow (equivalent to Assistant Professor) or Senior Fellow (mid-level Associate Professor) depending upon candidate's experience. The positions are long-term, supported by endowments.

CFP: PhD Workshop on Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy

The Environmental Policy Research Center (FFU) at Freie Universität Berlin is delighted to announce a call for papers for the first transatlantic PhD Workshop on “Forging Closer Ties: Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy”, in Berlin, November 29 - December 5, 2009. The Workshop will bring together PhD students and faculty from Freie Universität Berlin and North American universities to examine developments in transatlantic climate and energy relations. Supervised by renowned faculty from the US, Canada and Germany, doctoral students in the social sciences will present their research in the following focus areas: renewable energy policy, environmental policy, energy security, and climate change. The workshop will provide participating PhD students with the opportunity to discuss their papers with peers and senior researchers in working groups and plenary sessions. In addition, field trips will offer the participants the possibility to meet with representatives from various associations and think tanks, as well as with representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations and other institutions. The workshop is timed to proceed directly the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, December 7-18, 2009. Those wishing to attend the Copenhagen meeting can easily travel there after the end of the workshop.

The workshop aims at providing a forum for exchange of research ideas and at promoting network building among leading young researchers across the Atlantic. The sessions and meetings will introduce the participants to European and North American perspectives on environmental and energy issues and contribute to strengthening transatlantic dialogue on challenges and opportunities in the context of renewable energy development, climate change and energy security.

Submission Procedure: Interested PhD students enrolled at Canadian and US universities should submit a CV, one letter of recommendation and an abstract of their paper (approx. 1200 words) by email to Matthias Kuder <matthias.kuder@fu-berlin.de>no later than July 20, 2009. An international program committee will evaluate the submissions and select participants on a competitive basis. Selection of participants will be announced by August 15, 2009. There is no participation fee. Confirmed participants may be eligible for a Freie Universität fellowship covering travel costs and hotel accommodation. NOAA Coral Reef Management Fellowship

NOAA Coral Reef Management Fellowships are for two years. Specific projects are determined by each jurisdiction's coral reef management agencies. Fellows are located in Pago Pago, American Samoa; Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI); Miami, Florida; Adelup, Guam; Hawai`i; Puerto Rico; and St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Applicants typically have a master's degree and two years of experience or a bachelor's degree and four years of experience. Renewable Energy Fellowship in Germany

The 2009 Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellowship in Germany, a new initiative of the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), administered by InWEnt gGmbH in partnership with CDS International, Inc., is now accepting applications. The program allows 15 fellows to attend a 5-day briefing on Germany's renewable energy policies and structures and to complete an internship of 3-6 months with a leading renewable energy company or organization.

The program will run from September 5 through December 19, 2009, with the possibility to apply for a program through March 19, 2009. Fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of 3,300 Euro as well as support for travel expenditures to and in Germany. As part of the Transatlantic Climate Bridge, the Fellowship seeks to further mutual understanding and transatlantic cooperation in climate and energy policies, to provide practical training for future leaders in the renewable energy and environmental fields, and to support renewable energy institutions in developing their human resources and transatlantic networks.

Eligibility criteria for the Fellowship are as follows:

• U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or current enrollment at a U.S. university or college
• Age 32 or younger at the application deadline
• Minimum of 3 years completed at a college or university, preferably with degree completed in a relevant field (see website for more information)
• Two years experience in renewable energy or a related field, preferably in a professional capacity

International Research Travel Grants

This spring, ESF's Randolph G. Pack Environmental Institute is able to provide partial financial support for a small number of graduate student research travel grants in the area of international environmental or natural resources policy. The grants likely will not exceed $500 and are for ESF graduate student research travel commencing prior to June 30, 2009, or for non-reimbursed research travel expenses incurred during the current academic year, prior to that date. CFP: Conservation Meeting (Beijing 2009)

Those interested in species and ecosystem conservation are invited to participate in the 2009 annual meeting of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB). The 2009 meeting is being held in Beijing, China. The theme of the meeting is "Conservation: Harmony for Nature and Society". Because of the focus on nature and society, there will be abundant and exciting opportunities for conservation researchers and practitioners to participate in this conference, engage in stimulating debates on the status and direction of species and ecosystem conservation, and advance the field of conservation science. The call for abstracts is open. The deadline is January 21, so please prepare your submissions soon. Contributions from all fields of conservation research and practice are welcome, including natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. CFP: Environmental Studies Conf. (Ottawa)

The 2009 Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) Conference will be held May 27-29 at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario [3-1/2 hrs. north of Syracuse], as part of the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The ESAC Conference is hosted by Carleton's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. We invite interested academics, graduate students, practitioners and activists to join us in exploring research and teaching related to environmental studies in Canada. Various formats will be considered, including: papers, roundtable discussions, film screenings, posters, audio-visual submissions, etc. We welcome proposals for joint sessions with other scholarly associations.
