CFP: PhD Workshop on Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy

The Environmental Policy Research Center (FFU) at Freie Universität Berlin is delighted to announce a call for papers for the first transatlantic PhD Workshop on “Forging Closer Ties: Transatlantic Relations, Climate and Energy”, in Berlin, November 29 - December 5, 2009. The Workshop will bring together PhD students and faculty from Freie Universität Berlin and North American universities to examine developments in transatlantic climate and energy relations. Supervised by renowned faculty from the US, Canada and Germany, doctoral students in the social sciences will present their research in the following focus areas: renewable energy policy, environmental policy, energy security, and climate change. The workshop will provide participating PhD students with the opportunity to discuss their papers with peers and senior researchers in working groups and plenary sessions. In addition, field trips will offer the participants the possibility to meet with representatives from various associations and think tanks, as well as with representatives from governmental and non-governmental organizations and other institutions. The workshop is timed to proceed directly the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, December 7-18, 2009. Those wishing to attend the Copenhagen meeting can easily travel there after the end of the workshop.

The workshop aims at providing a forum for exchange of research ideas and at promoting network building among leading young researchers across the Atlantic. The sessions and meetings will introduce the participants to European and North American perspectives on environmental and energy issues and contribute to strengthening transatlantic dialogue on challenges and opportunities in the context of renewable energy development, climate change and energy security.

Submission Procedure: Interested PhD students enrolled at Canadian and US universities should submit a CV, one letter of recommendation and an abstract of their paper (approx. 1200 words) by email to Matthias Kuder <matthias.kuder@fu-berlin.de>no later than July 20, 2009. An international program committee will evaluate the submissions and select participants on a competitive basis. Selection of participants will be announced by August 15, 2009. There is no participation fee. Confirmed participants may be eligible for a Freie Universität fellowship covering travel costs and hotel accommodation. Freie Universität will provide up to 10 such fellowships which will be granted based on quality and relevance of the abstract. For further information please contact Matthias Kuder.

CFP: Political Ecology Paper Prize

The Political Ecology Society (PESO) announces the 2010 Eric Wolf Prize for the best article-length paper based on dissertation research. We seek papers based in substantive field research that make an innovative contribution to Political Ecology. To be eligible for the competition, scholars must be ABD or have received their Ph.D. within the two years prior to publication of this announcement. A cash prize of $500 accompanies the award, which will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology. The paper will be published in the Journal of Political Ecology.

The preferred format for papers is electronic, but CDs and paper will also be accepted. CFP: Conservation Meeting (Beijing 2009)

Those interested in species and ecosystem conservation are invited to participate in the 2009 annual meeting of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB). The 2009 meeting is being held in Beijing, China. The theme of the meeting is "Conservation: Harmony for Nature and Society". Because of the focus on nature and society, there will be abundant and exciting opportunities for conservation researchers and practitioners to participate in this conference, engage in stimulating debates on the status and direction of species and ecosystem conservation, and advance the field of conservation science. The call for abstracts is open. The deadline is January 21, so please prepare your submissions soon. Contributions from all fields of conservation research and practice are welcome, including natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. CFP: Environmental Studies Conf. (Ottawa)

The 2009 Environmental Studies Association of Canada (ESAC) Conference will be held May 27-29 at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario [3-1/2 hrs. north of Syracuse], as part of the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The ESAC Conference is hosted by Carleton's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. We invite interested academics, graduate students, practitioners and activists to join us in exploring research and teaching related to environmental studies in Canada. Various formats will be considered, including: papers, roundtable discussions, film screenings, posters, audio-visual submissions, etc. We welcome proposals for joint sessions with other scholarly associations.

Student Paper Awards: Food and Society

The Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society, and the Association for the Study of Food and Society both will give awards for best student papers submitted for presentation at their upcoming joint conference at Pennsylvania State University, May 28 - June 3:

I. Association for the Study of Food and Society

II. Agriculture Food and Human Values Society Student Essay Competition

Eligibility. Students who submit abstracts to present at the 2009 Joint Annual Meeting may also submit a full version of their paper to be considered in the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society student essay competition. The AFHV Society Student Paper Award Committee will select up to one undergraduate student and one graduate student to receive awards for contributed papers of scholarly excellence.

Theme. Papers should be related to theme, "Informing Possibilities for the Future of Food and Agriculture". AFHVS promotes open discussion of questions such as the sustainability of modern food production practices; alternative visions of food systems; the benefits and risks of biological technologies; and food security in developed and developing countries.

Award. Each award will include a $400 stipend and payment of the registration fee and banquet ticket for the 2009 AFHVS Annual Meeting Meetings (May 28 - June 3) at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA

Requirements. Award winners are expected to present their paper at the annual meeting. Each submission must be accompanied by an e-mail or letter from the student's academic supervisor verifying that the author is an undergraduate or graduate student, and that the student was the primary person responsible for the paper's genesis, development, and writing.

No Double Submissions: Papers submitted to AFHVS cannot be submitted to the Association for the Study of Food and Society Student Paper Award (and vice versa). AFHVS reserves the right to refer papers to ASFS.

Opportunity for Publication. Based on the recommendation of the Student Paper Award Committee recommendation, the papers may be forwarded to the journal of Agriculture and Human Values for further peer review. Note that papers submitted for the student paper competition do not have a required format. To be submitted to the Society's Journal for publication, however, papers should be full-length and in the format specified by the journal. (For full details, see www.afhvs.org).
